Whistler-Wells Gray NP

sunny
View Canada/USA 2014 on warnerc5's travel map.

Mainly a driving day from Whistler to Wells Gray NP, near Clearwater (5hrs on the road) up through the Rocky Mtns. Lots of contrasting scenery ranging from high mountain passes, canyons, followed fast flowing wandering rivers, rolling 'dry and barren' goldfields hills and big wide rivers through the valleys. Highlights included Lower Joffre lake ( beautiful colours, complete with high mountain and glacier in the background), Pavillion lake with freshwater coral making a spectacular colour, Spahats Falls and within Wells Gray NP, Dawson Falls (a mini Niagara) and Helmcken Falls (4th tallest in Canada). Also travelled through some ranch country and passed Lillooet ( history of gold mining). Saw a red fox crossing the road and hummingbirds at our accommodation!

Jasper

sunny 24 °C

Back into the classic Canada landscape of mountains, conifers & river all in the same scene. Not many stops until Mt Robson. What a sight appears around a blind bend!

Made it into Jasper mid afternoon. Busy town with heaps of accommodation & shops & people! Surrounded by majestic mountains! Settled into accommodation, did some shopping, then set out for some sight seeing at about 5pm (doesn't get dark here till about 10pm!). Drove to Maligne Lake after passing Medicine Lake. Got home after 9.

Whistler

sunny 26 °C

Collected hire car and drove to Whistler (120km) which is a world famous ski resort. Took the gondola up to peak, then chair lift to the summit. Spectacular views! Then rode the Peak to Peak Gondola from Whistler to Blackcomb Mt. This gondola ride boasts the worlds longest unsupported free span between towers (3km) and highest point above ground (436m)!! Were told to look out for black bears below feeding on berries, but unfortunately didn't see any. Had a beer up top- very warm day- got sunburnt! Rode chairlift back down late afternoon. Craig managed to lose his Dockers hat on the way down!
The village was really busy, even though it's summer. Plenty of mountain bikers riding the trails & families enjoying activities in the village.
Great day!
